what is GPL?
GPL - General Public License
The software we use to develop websites is a 'Content Management Software' (CMS) package, which is released under a software license called the Gnu Public Licence (GPL).
The licenses for most software are designed to take away your freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change free software - to make sure the software is free for all its users. GNU/GPL license provides inherent rights to perform any system change or customisation thereby giving true independence of manufacturer or agency.
So what is Content Management?
In a nutshell: Is a piece of software running on a server, usually a database application. Using an open source Web Content Management System (CMS) is a very cost effective way to deliver your website solution, as the software itself has NO upfront or ongoing license fees.
In more detail: A CMS makes it easy to publish and administrate website content. There is no need to learn web programming, like HTML, XML or DHTML skills, a built-in editor allows you to design and create your content without the need for HTML code. Maintaining a website has never been easier. If you can use a web browser, you can use an open source Web Content Management System.
Some basic features common to all CMS's
Separation of content, structure and design bring about many decisive advantages throughout the lifecycle of a website and beyond. The website's look & feel can be changed or relaunched leaving existing content untouched. No need for copy/paste action simply let the CMS recreate the previously existing content in its new design.
Easy content production, no programming skills required. If you can read and can type, then you can manage content!
Via a graphical user interface authors can simply create texts, insert images and multimedia files, schedule content (and much more) to build and maintain a dynamic website. This is especially the case if you can take advantage of our chosen CMS's server-side graphics generation for making navigation items, graphical headlines, etc.
